What is Shell Counting Day?

Shell Counting Day is an annual beach event where people collect and count shells along the coast. Anyone can participate, whether you are a seasoned shell expert or visiting the beach for the first time. You collect a hundred shells at a spot near the tide line, sort them by type and note down what you have found. Along the way, expert volunteers are on hand to help you identify and learn more about the shells and marine life.

Participate on Ameland

During Shell Counting Day, counting will take place at various locations, including on Ameland at the beach called ''Paal 17'' on the east side of the island. Here, ''Natuurcentrum Ameland'' is organising a free shell counting day with extra activities and guidance. You can register in advance to be sure of a place on the excursion, but you are also welcome to join in spontaneously.

How does it work?

Go to the beach between 10:00 and 16:00 and collect 100 shells around a central point at the high tide line. Use the counting form with search card to identify the species and note down your numbers.
