Demonstrations Horse lifeboat

At the Ameland Horse-drawn Lifeboat, you can experience a unique piece of maritime heritage. During demonstrations, ten powerful horses pull the historic lifeboat “Abraham Fock” across the beach and into the sea, just like in the old days. This impressive demonstration is a combination of strength, history and cooperation between man and animal.

A centuries-old tradition by the sea

Step back in time and see how the horse-drawn lifeboat is launched from the beach. In the past, since 1824, this was a common way to rescue boats in distress at sea. The demonstrations allow you to experience what was involved: the power of the horses, the cooperation and the tension of the moment. Nowadays, this is no longer done for real rescues, but the tradition lives on in these special demonstrations.

What can you expect?

• Free admission: you can attend the demonstration free of charge. During the event, a voluntary collection will be held for the Horse Lifeboat Foundation, which supports this living heritage.
• Spectacular spectacle: ten powerful horses pull the boat across the beach and through the surf. It is an event that impresses young and old alike.
• Authentic experience: you will see how rescue operations at sea used to begin – with horsepower, teamwork and courage.

Tip!

• Park your car at Jan Jacobsweg and walk the last stretch to the beach. It is about 1 kilometre on foot or by bicycle.
• Be on time. The demonstration starts exactly at the specified time and it can get busy with visitors.
