About Strandcamping Ameland

Strandcamping Duinoord has been a trusted spot by the sea since 1949. It's a campsite where you can feel the dunes, experience the tranquillity and immediately embrace island life. What started as a simple camping spot has grown into an atmospheric campsite with modern facilities, sustainable ambitions and a warm connection with the island.

On this page, you can read more about our story, the foundation behind Duinoord, and what makes this special place so unique.

The early years of Duinoord

As early as 1938, the first campers settled in the dunes near Duinoord. They were attracted by the lively atmosphere around the Scheltema bathing pavilion and discovered how special it was to spend the night here, so close to the sea. After the Second World War, camping quickly picked up again. First in simple tents, later in self-built camper vans, with which islanders and guests created their own place among the marram grass.

The popularity of camping is evident from the numbers. In 1949, 30,000 overnight stays were already registered at Duinoord. By 1972, that number had risen to over 175,000. In a short period of time, Duinoord grew to become one of the most visited camping sites on Ameland.

In the early years, the site was managed by the municipality and Domains, but from 1949 onwards, the foundation officially took over. The Jan van Eijckweg is a reminder of the first campsite manager,

, who was appointed by them. That marked the moment when Duinoord was able to develop further into a fully-fledged campsite.

The current Midgaard holiday home is reminiscent of the holiday homes that used to stand here. In 1949, a similar house served as the Duinoord camp office. There was a small office where campers registered before they were allowed to pitch their tents in the dunes. It was a simple start, which formed the basis for the campsite that Duinoord is today.

More than 75 years later, Duinoord is still a popular camping spot right by the sea. The atmosphere has remained the same over the years: free, relaxed and connected to the island. Many families have been coming back for decades, sometimes even four generations in a row.

A foundation with a special purpose

Strandcamping Duinoord is supported by Stichting Kampvreugd. The foundation was established with the aim of providing an accessible and social holiday destination. This value remains important today and is realised by devoting part of the proceeds to providing holidays on Ameland for people with limited financial means.

Holidays are important for everyone, especially when life is tough. The sea, the space and letting go of everyday pressures give you breathing space. And sometimes that is exactly what you need. By 2025, around a hundred holidays will have been made possible. Holidays that make a difference and to which you contribute, simply by camping here.
