Visit Ameland Lighthouse
Experience one of the most iconic landmarks of Ameland: the island’s striking lighthouse near Hollum. With its distinctive red-and-white stripes and an impressive height of 58 metres, it has become a true symbol of the island. Whether you are drawn by history, breathtaking views or simply enjoy an active outing, a visit to the lighthouse offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
The impressive Ameland Lighthouse
Rising high above the dunes, the cast-iron lighthouse is one of the most recognisable sights on the island. Built between 1881 and 1882 by order of King William III, it has stood as a guiding beacon for over a century. With 15 floors, the tower dominates the landscape and can be seen from far across the island. Its bold red-and-white pattern not only adds to its charm but once played a vital role in guiding ships safely along the North Sea coast.
Did you know… the lighthouse originally featured nine red and nine white bands? Today, only five of each remain.

The lighthouse during the Second World War
The lighthouse also played a role in a remarkable chapter of history. In May 1940, at the outbreak of the Second World War, the Dutch Ministry of the Navy ordered the destruction of lighthouse optics across the country.
These optics, consisting of lenses and mirrors, were essential for projecting powerful light beams used in navigation. By destroying them, the authorities aimed to prevent German forces from using the lighthouses as navigational aids. This drastic measure was carried out in only two locations in the Netherlands, with Ameland being one of them.

Climbing the lighthouse
Climbing the lighthouse is an experience in itself. The ascent of 236 steps offers a rewarding physical challenge, suitable for both adults and older children. As you make your way up, each level reveals small exhibitions that bring the lighthouse to life, from its construction and maintenance to the daily routines of lighthouse keepers. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the island, the dunes and the vast North Sea. On a clear day, the scenery is truly unforgettable.
