History and culture in Hollum
Hollum is a historic village on Ameland. The atmosphere of the past is still tangible here, with narrow cobbled streets, old commanders' houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, and unique museums.
Visit the Sorgdrager Cultural History Museum for a glimpse into the lives of the Amelanders through the centuries. Or discover the Abraham Fock Lifeboat Museum, where you can learn all about the heroic rescue operations at sea. Several times a season, demonstrations are given here of the historic lifeboat, pulled by a team of horses. These impressive events are made possible entirely by volunteers.
And of course, there is the pride of Hollum: the Ameland Lighthouse. This 55-metre-high tower is not only photogenic, but also offers spectacular views of the dunes, beach and mudflats from the top.

Nature & adventure around Hollum
Hollum is situated close to beautiful nature reserves. Go for a walk or a cycle through the Súd-West, explore the Engelsmanduun or the woods near the lighthouse, and enjoy the peace and space of the dune landscape. The Paardengraf, a unique historical site where horses that drowned from the lifeboat are buried, is also a short distance away. Let yourself be surprised by the nature and stories surrounding Hollum. The beach is never far away either: ideal for a relaxing walk or a picnic with a view of the North Sea.
Looking for something more active? Join a mudflat excursion, book a horse ride on the beach or hire a bicycle and discover the western part of Ameland at your own pace.

Art, market & atmosphere in the village
Hollum is surprisingly lively, especially in the summer months. You will find cosy markets, small galleries and local studios. Cultural events such as open studios or exhibitions by Ameland artists are held regularly. The village also offers a wide range of shops: from local delicacies and handmade products to unique souvenirs. Wine lovers take note: there is even a real wine shop in Hollum, where wine tastings are regularly organised.

Eating, drinking and enjoying yourself
Hollum is a culinary delight! For fresh fish, visit the local fishmonger. You can also opt for a traditional Frisian dish in a pub, or a coffee break with homemade cake: the choice is varied and welcoming. Take a seat on a sunny terrace, sample local products or sit down for an extensive dinner. The atmosphere is relaxed and the hospitality is typical of Ameland.
As the day draws to a close, Hollum comes to life in a different way. In the cosy cafés and atmospheric bars, you can relax and reminisce with a good glass of wine and a friendly atmosphere. Sometimes there is live music or you can join in a pub quiz. Please note: there are no campfires on the terrace, but the evenings are still warm, relaxed and typically island-like.
