Campsite with Green Key Gold certification

More and more people are consciously choosing holidays that not only offer relaxation but also minimise the impact on nature. At Strandcamping Duinoord, we share this philosophy. With our Green Key Gold certification – the highest recognition for sustainable business practices in our sector – you can be sure of a stay where care for people and the environment is a given.

Green Key Gold

We have once again achieved Green Key Gold certification in 2026. This is the highest accolade for sustainable business practices in the leisure sector. It means that we use energy, water and waste responsibly, and care deeply about nature, people and the environment. View our Green Key certificate (PDF)

For you as a guest, this means you are staying in a place where comfort and care for nature go hand in hand. Without compromising on convenience and comfort.

Our efforts – future-oriented

At Strandcamping Duinoord, we cherish nature and are actively committed to a green future. We do this by:

Reducing energy, water and CO2 consumption

  • Charging points for electric cars.
  • The roof of our shed is fitted with solar panels to generate energy.
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting and sensors in many areas of the campsite.
  • Taps and showers with limited water consumption, without compromising on comfort.
  • Monthly checks for water leaks have already led to savings of no less than 70%.
  • Our wooden lighting posts are powered entirely by solar energy; functional and atmospheric.
  • We have switched from gas dryers to efficient electric dryers.

Less waste and smart processing

  • Thanks to our partnership with Too Good To Go, we are helping to combat food waste.
  • We donate food approaching its use-by date to the Food Bank. This is socially responsible and prevents waste.
  • We collect returnable bottles at the entrance to the main building. The proceeds go to charity.
  • Centralised waste collection prevents unnecessary journeys by refuse lorries, thereby reducing emissions.
  • There are various bins on our site for waste separation. Clear pictograms (general waste, glass, paper) are displayed on the bins. Unfortunately, there are not (yet) any facilities on Ameland for separating plastic, for example.

Sustainable products

  • Paper products such as printing paper and toilet paper carry an eco-label (such as the EU Ecolabel). This means they come from responsibly managed forests and are produced with minimal environmental impact.
  • Our everyday cleaning products also carry an eco-label. They contain fewer environmentally harmful substances.
  • Our supermarket stocks a wide range of local products. In this way, we support the local economy and reduce transport distances. We also offer an extensive range for those who prefer organic, gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian food.
  • Where possible, we use electric appliances, such as our eco-friendly lawnmower.

Nature conservation and education

  • We monitor and preserve the natural beauty on and around our campsite.
  • Our nature excursions offer a unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the local flora and fauna.

Conscious collaboration

  • We are advised by Green Label Service, a specialist in sustainability within the hospitality sector. They help us make achievable and measurable improvements in areas such as energy, water, waste and social engagement.
  • At our campsite, you’ll find the bike rental company Kiewit. We’re keen to encourage less car use and more cycling.
  • We work in partnership with Staatsbosbeheer. For every review we receive, we donate a sum to Staatsbosbeheer. That money is used to plant trees and enhance nature on Ameland.

Enjoy your holiday with a feel-good factor

At Strandcamping Duinoord, we believe that every step counts. Together with our guests, we create an unforgettable holiday experience, with care for people and the environment. Come and enjoy peace and nature; together, we’re building a greener future.

Our tips for enjoying Ameland responsibly:

  • Come without a car – You don’t need to bring your car to Ameland. You can use our luggage service from Holwerd, and on the island everything is easily accessible by bike or public transport.
  • Cycle from the ferry – Hire bikes on arrival and have your luggage delivered to the campsite free of charge. This way, your holiday starts off relaxed and sustainable.
  • Use a reusable bottle or cup – Reduce waste by using your own water bottle or coffee cup. In our supermarket, you’ll find handy options, such as mugs with a deposit.
  • Prevent food waste – When shopping in our supermarket, take a look at the Too Good To Go corner, where products are offered at a discount. Tasty and sustainable!
  • Sort your waste – On our premises, you’ll find separate bins for general waste, glass and paper. This way, we all contribute to recycling.
  • Think green, live green – Small choices make a big difference: don’t leave lights on unnecessarily, switch off appliances and use water sensibly.
  • Write a review about us – for every review, we’ll make a donation to Staatsbosbeheer. This way, you’ll be helping to plant trees, restore the dunes and boost biodiversity on Ameland.

Thank you for helping us keep Ameland green.
