We do this though practical measures on and around the campsite. From solar panels and LED lighting to water-saving facilities and measures to reduce food waste.
Our approach is also independently assessed. Strandcamping Duinoord has once again been awarded the Green Key Gold certificate in 2026.
What are we doing in terms of sustainability?
Sustainability is a broad concept. That’s why we prefer to explain specifically what we’re doing. At Strandcamping Duinoord, we’re taking steps to reduce our energy and water consumption, sort our waste and minimise waste.
This way, as a guest, you’ll know what we’re focusing on and what measures you’ll encounter during your stay.
Energy and water
We are taking measures to manage energy and water consumption in various areas of the campsite:
- Solar panels are installed on the roof of our shed to generate electricity.
- We use LED lighting and sensors in various locations.
- Our wooden lighting posts are solar-powered.
- We have switched from gas tumble dryers to electric ones.
- Taps and showers are set to limit water consumption.
- We carry out monthly checks to detect any water leaks.
- There are charging points for electric cars on the campsite.
Reducing waste and sorting waste
When it comes to waste, we also look at what we can do in practical terms at the campsite.
In our supermarket, we work in partnership with Too Good To Go. This ensures that products which might otherwise go to waste are put to good use. We also donate eligible food to the Food Bank.
At the campsite, there are bins for general waste, glass and paper. Clear pictograms help you put your waste in the correct bin.
We also collect returnable bottles at the entrance to the main building. The proceeds go to charity.
Products and local choices
We also take the characteristics and origin of products into account when sourcing them.
Various paper products we use, including printing paper and toilet paper, carry an eco-label. We also use eco-labelled products for our daily cleaning.
In the supermarket, you’ll also find all sorts of products from Ameland and the surrounding region. These include Ameland cheese, sausages and mustard. You’ll also find organic, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free products.
Where possible, we use electric appliances, such as our electric lawnmower.

Attention to Ameland’s natural environment
At Duinoord, you’ll be camping right in the middle of the dunes and within walking distance of the North Sea beach. These surroundings make a stay here truly special.
We work in partnership with Staatsbosbeheer. For every review we receive, we donate a sum to Staatsbosbeheer. We also organise nature walks where you can discover more about Ameland’s flora and fauna.
This way, nature isn’t just part of the scenery around your pitch, but also an integral part of your holiday.
What can you do to make your stay on Ameland more sustainable?
Are you looking for ways to be mindful of energy, water, waste and the environment during your holiday? There are a few practical choices that can easily be incorporated into your stay.
Get on your bike
Cycle straight off the ferry – hire a bike at the ferry terminal and have your luggage delivered to the campsite free of charge. That way, your holiday on Ameland begins straight away on two wheels. Read more.
Hire a bike at the campsite – At Strandcamping Duinoord, you’ll find Kiewiet bike hire. Hop on and explore Ameland’s villages, dunes and other beautiful spots by bike.
Reuse your bottle or cup
Bring a refillable water bottle or coffee mug with you. That way, you can use the same bottle or cup several times during your stay. In our supermarket, you’ll find handy options, such as mugs with a deposit.
Help prevent food waste
When you’re out shopping, check out the offers on Too Good To Go. That way, groceries that might otherwise go to waste can still be put to good use.
Sort your rubbish
Use the different bins for general waste, glass and paper. The symbols on the bins show where your rubbish belongs.
Be mindful of water and energy
Switch off lights when you’re not using them, switch off appliances, and be mindful of your water usage when showering and washing up.
