Horse Marathon Ameland

The Ameland Horse Marathon is an energetic sporting event for horses, ponies and drivers that takes place every summer on the island. This spectacular event is organised by the Amelander Men- en Rijvereniging (Ameland Driving and Riding Association) and shows you how skill and cooperation between rider and animal come together in a challenging competition.

Parts of the marathon

On the first day of the marathon, the dressage test and the agility course are held at ''Manege De Seelon''. The second day is the marathon, in which the participants and their horses or ponies complete a challenging course with obstacles and time pressure. The obstacles, often eight in total, are set up in the countryside around one of the four villages: Hollum, Ballum, Nes or Buren.

Atmosphere and audience

The audience enjoys not only the competition itself, but also the lively atmosphere along the course. Spectators line the route, cheering on the participants and making the event a real day out for families, friends and horse lovers. It is a great opportunity to experience equestrian sports up close, see the power and elegance of the animals and meet each other.

The horse marathon is sure to impress if you love sports and animals. The variety of horses and ponies makes the competition extra exciting. Some horses are large and fast, but the smaller ponies are much more agile. You may be very surprised to see who crosses the finish line first! So bring a chair or blanket to sit along the course, because it can be a day-long event.
