Open Monument Day Ameland

Open Monument Day on Ameland is an annual cultural heritage weekend during which you can visit special buildings and monuments that are not always accessible. This event takes place in September and offers you the opportunity to discover the history of Ameland in detail, with a focus on architecture, stories and national monuments.

What is Open Monument Day?

During Open Monument Day, various monuments and museums on Ameland open their doors to the public. You can then view the interior of some of the 112 national monuments on the island, with explanations from tour guides, residents or attendants who will tell you more about the history of the buildings and their inhabitants.

Monuments and locations you can visit

There are several monuments on Ameland that participate in Open Monument Day. In Nes, you can visit the Amelander Cultuurmuseum and windmill ''De Phenix'', while in Hollum, windmill ''De Verwachting'' and the Cultuurhistorisch Museum Sorgdrager are open. You can also take part in guided tours of the protected village views in the villages of Nes, Ballum and Hollum. You can recognise the participating monuments by the special Open Monument Day flag.

Guided tours and stories

On both days, there will be free guided tours through the villages of Nes, Ballum and Hollum. These tours usually start around noon and take you past historic buildings and special places. There will also be storytellers from ''Ameland Vertel!'' at locations including the Sorgdrager Cultural History Museum in Hollum and St. Clement's Church in Nes, who will take you on a journey through the island's rich history.
