Ballum is the smallest village on Ameland, but it has a rich history. The village's roots date back to the Middle Ages, which is reflected in its old streets, characteristic church and former town hall, once the residence of the Camminghas, the former rulers of the island.
Stroll through the village at your leisure and admire the authentic architecture and traditional details. Ballum has an atmosphere of simplicity, tranquillity and history that you won't find anywhere else on the island. And: here you will find the famous family business Nobel, known for its liqueur “Nobeltje”. The distillery is deeply rooted in the village's history and well worth a visit!

The area around Ballum is green, spacious and quiet: perfect for long walks or a peaceful bike ride. You won't find any busy shops or tourist crowds here, but you will find sweeping views, birdsong and little surprises along the way. Ballum is also unique because of its “green beach”: a rare coastal landscape with grassy fields that merge into the beach, perfect for picnics, playing or quietly enjoying the view.
The beach is also nearby: quiet and expansive, ideal for those who want to get some fresh air or simply enjoy the sound of the sea.

What makes Ballum so special is its personal atmosphere. Local residents are hospitable, and traditional craftsmanship is still very much alive here. Think handmade works of art, regional products and small studios that you can simply walk into. For a pleasant break, settle down in one of the cosy cafés or the village café with its terrace: a meeting place for residents and visitors, where you will quickly feel at home.

In the evening, tranquillity returns to Ballum. There are no busy nightspots, but there is a cosy village pub, beautiful evening skies and the silence of the island. It is the ideal place to recharge your batteries, read a good book or simply enjoy the peace and quiet.
